THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS

YOU CAN MAKE FOR YOUR NEWBORN PORTRAITS

You’ve already selected a photographer. Check!

What are the three most important choices you can make for your photography session? Location, the time of day, and clothing are three key factors for achieving the portraits you’re dreaming of! And here’s why.

LOCATION

It’s ideal to be photographed in a neutral room with lots of light. You don’t want a cluttered or busy background. A simple, neutral room keeps the focus of the photos on the most important subjects, you and your loved ones! An abundance of light helps your photos to look more natural and reduces grain, which produces beautiful, high quality prints and albums.

If you know me, you know I love white. It’s just so clean and classic and makes a wonderful backdrop for portraits. It’s the perfect compliment to any color palette.

TIME OF DAY

You’ve likely heard of golden hour, the final hour of sunlight before sunset. But there’s another “golden” time of day, and that is the first hour or two after sunrise. For families with young children, and especially for newborns, this can be an ideal time to be photographed. Newborns tend to sleep longer and more soundly during the morning hours, which allows us to achieve those cute, sleepy poses. In my experience, children and toddlers are a little more cooperative in the morning hours as well. They tend to follow instruction better with a full night’s rest and a full tummy.

CLOTHING

Making the right clothing options for each member of your family will help you to appear as a cohesive unit in your photos. You can even dress family members in the same color and use different textures to add visual interest. Choosing neutral colors and simple patterns will allow you to enjoy timeless photos. Logos and icons can sometimes be removed from an image, but I typically advise against wearing shirts with any wording or logos.
